Architectural Lighting Design

Artificial and natural lighting impacts our total environment. It influences our perception of the environment and affects our behavior within our surroundings. What is architecture without light? Lighting accentuates the architectural and interior design. It creates the mood or atmosphere, adds color or sparkle, enhances the performance of a task and provides a sense of safety and comfort. Quality, effective lighting can influence wayfinding throughout an environment and transform a space from a business environment to a social event environment.

For instance, the special grid design for the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia, creates a dynamic and themed atmosphere within the event space to support a wide variety of spaces and arrangements for the exhibits and displays. At Cornell University’s Bill & Melinda Gates Hall in Ithaca, New York, our innovative lighting design showcases the iconic architecture while providing functional learning environments for students, faculty and visitors.

Diverse Team

Syska Hennessy Group has been at the leading edge of lighting design since the 1960s. The diverse backgrounds of our dedicated team in architecture, interior design, theater and lighting design provide unique perspective and insight into the lighting design process. These distinct characteristics support the creative balance of combining the artful application of lighting with the depth of technical expertise. We closely collaborate with the design team to develop lighting design solutions which are seamlessly integrated into the architecture and interior design.

Our lighting design team is committed to design excellence. Principal and senior designers are committed to each project from early conception through post occupancy. We focus on design details and participate in an ongoing quality assurance process. In addition, we understand energy codes, requirements and controls. From corporate office environments and hospitality spaces, to educational, healthcare and government facilities, our team has experience in a wide range of projects.

Sustainable Solutions

Incorporation of sustainable solutions into each project is second nature to our team. We are fully committed to the investment in our environmental future and supporting our clients’ commitment to environmental stewardship. Our design solutions incorporate daylight integration, tunable lighting, automated lighting controls and control of surface brightness without sacrificing style. We collaborate with numerous project teams to achieve LEED and WELL certification and have embraced the Architecture 2030 Challenge.

Deliver Unique Design Solutions

We participate in early visioning sessions with the client and design team to become immersed in each project’s unique requirements and challenges. This “Think-Tank Process” provides valuable insight into supporting the following goals: design aesthetics, business goals, working culture, budget and schedule constraints. In-depth research, in addition to early visioning sessions, provides us with a better understanding as to how light will affect our clients’ culture and operations.

So, when InBev merged with Anheuser-Busch, we designed a lighting system to help foster the combined company’s corporate culture in its New York office space. The newly combined home provides a creative, collaborative environment, which is reinforced with an open atrium that vertically connects the five floors. The ground floor event space engages with the street scene via the transparent storefront. The stadium seating and microbrewery reinforce the new AB InBev collaborative culture.

Another example was when we were called upon for the renovation, re-positioning and re-branding of The Ritz-Carlton to the new The Camby Hotel, part of the Autograph Collection of hotels owned by Marriott International in Phoenix, Arizona. Our team understood that the lighting for this project had to be fresh and unexpected to reinforce the culture of the brand and the regionally inspired design. This project has been featured in numerous publications, including Metropolis, Luxury Travel and Lonny magazines.
