Aviation Solutions
Airports are a traveler’s welcoming gateway that offers convenience, comfort, aesthetic interest and amenities; they have become a destination in themselves. By creating a seamless passenger experience, airport owners create lasting passenger loyalty.
Syska Hennessy Group understands that. With more than 18 million sf of aviation facilities designed in the past several years, we design core building systems for projects large and small. From redevelopment of existing terminals, new and replacement terminals, first- and business-class lounges, ground transportation facilities and concessions, the focus is always on the travelers who use them.
Large projects include recently completed aviation terminals such as Delta Airlines Terminal 4 extension at John F. Kennedy International Airport, the new Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport, the new North Terminal at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, currently under construction, and Orlando International Airport South Terminal, which is now in design.
Designing Smarter Terminals
Syska addresses all building systems: MEP and fire protection, telecommunications, security, audiovisual, vertical transportation systems, architectural lighting and the building management controls that operate and optimize aviation facilities. Integrated building management controls can improve systems performance and provide operational savings while assuring thermal comfort.
Delivering Sustainability Energy-Efficiencies Solutions
With increasingly stringent mandates by local municipalities to reduce carbon emissions, airport authorities rely on Syska’s high-performance expertise and analytics tools to meet their sustainability goals. A recent project, the Terminal 2 West expansion at San Diego International Airport, became the first-ever certified LEED Platinum. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for predictive airflow performance and solar and energy models defined scenarios that the design team successfully deployed.
For the Long Beach Airport terminal expansion project, electrical power demand dropped after our analytics and design provided strategies such as incorporating lightshelves into the façade and adding on-site photovoltaics that reduced energy consumption by 14 percent.
For Washington Dulles International Airport, we designed a displacement ventilation air supply that resolved inadequate space availability for traditional, overhead air distribution, delivering superior performance under extreme temperature conditions.
Tenured Client Partnerships
While Syska is at the leading edge of engineering innovation, our fundamental mission to solve our clients’ challenges has remained consistent. We offer a complete range of delivery methods, varying from traditional design-bid-build, design-build, P3 and Construction Manager at Risk.
We are proud of our long-term client relationships with airports that stretch back many years; they include John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, Washington Dulles, Greenville-Spartanburg, Los Angeles, Long Beach, John Wayne and San Diego. Our work together has improved the passenger experience for millions who pass through these airport terminals every year.
