Hotel Del Coronado – Victorian Building & Grande Hall, Coronado, California
The Hotel Del Coronado is a national landmark of San Diego. Reining over Coronado beach, the Del, as it’s been coined by locals, is a staple of San Diego history, showcasing its Victorian style architecture and historic charm to new guests from all over the world. With an intent to restore and modernize classic areas of the hotel, WATG architecture firm led the design renovation process and recruited Syska Hennessey’s engineers for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design services in the Victorian Building lobby and Grande Hall.
Although the Del welcomes guests from the modern age, its systems, or for better words, lack of, were far from up to date. Syska engineers faced the main obstacle of designing modern systems which could seamlessly blend with the original decor of the space. One example of the ingenuity within Syska’s mechanical team, was their implementation of an HVAC system which the Del’s lobby lacked entirely.
Syska’s engineering team incorporated modern systems into a structure which embodies the essence of San Diego. No easy task, the team diligently worked to preserve the Del’s original style while adding modern touches that today’s guests can enjoy. Ultimately, the team was granted the honor award at SCDF (Southern California Development Forum) for the design.
