When Time Warner Cable planned an enterprise data center program, beginning with a new flagship data center at its regional headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, Syska was retained for the MEP and fire protection design for the Tier III center as well to design for the 25-KV primary utility substations.
This is a two-story facility comprising 178,000 sf with mechanical and electrical support spaces on the first floor, data pods on the second story and office components on both floors.
The design provided for scalable growth of both raised-floor and critical-infrastructure systems to provide uniform density of approximately 150 watts/sf with limited higher densities in designated areas. The Day-One program built out the first two 12,000-sf data pods with provisions to add another two 12,000-sf pods when required. We used Revit to ensure seamless integration with the subcontractors, and progress fly-throughs with the owner as the building was constructed.
We developed an energy model of both the infrastructure and technology components of the design to demonstrate significant improvement in energy performance beyond the ASHRAE 90.1 baseline.
