To design the MEP/FP systems for a new, world-class, Western-style, international hospital, Syska Hennessy Group combined its high-level healthcare engineering design solutions in New York with our Shanghai office’s knowledge of local design as well as stringent code and approval requirements.

The result is a globally recognized medical institution that is the largest foreign-majority-owned tertiary-level hospital in Shanghai, approved for more than 500 beds (246 beds in phase one), and that has the first international general hospital license granted by China’s Ministry of Health.

Syska developed the pre-concept design phase for the MEP schematic design, including basis of design for MEP/FP, and eventually 100 percent of the design development. Construction documents were then produced based upon our latest drawings, and we continued to oversee the design.

Aiming to establish best practices and a new standard of care, this noteworthy project consists of a two-story interventional platform, a six-story outpatient clinic and a 15-story patient bed tower in which to provide superior integrated healthcare services along with professional training and clinical research. An adjacent central utility plant supports the entire complex. The total allowable construction area is 100,000 m2 above grade and 40,000 m2 underground. The maximum building height is 90 meters.
