New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Emergency Department Expansion, Wilmington, NC

Add to Brochure

Over the past five years, Syska has been New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) engineer-of-choice, completing more than twenty projects.

NHRMC retained Syska for the complete renovation of their existing emergency department and the addition of 10,000 sf., scheduled to be completed in early 2017. In partnership with BBH Design, Syska provided MEP/FP engineering services for a phased construction project.

The project involved five phases and required uninterrupted use of the emergency department, with zero downtime, all while maintaining continuous infection control.

A new 20,000 CFM AHU was added to support the new construction and a portion of the existing department. In addition, the area served by the existing AHU was reduced in order to increase that system’s capacity for the remaining area served. All new ductwork and new VAV distribution was established to ensure adequate coverage and pressure relationships were addressed properly. A complete redistribution of the medical gas system was designed to accommodate the new program.

Electrical engineering design addressed new power distribution, critical cut over scenarios, and new isolated power panels where required. In addition, a connection had to be made at the main electrical gear.
