Syska Hennessy Group Receives Two Engineering Excellence Awards from ACEC California

Culver City, CA — Syska Hennessy Group, an international consulting, engineering and commissioning firm, has won two Engineering Excellence awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies California (ACEC California).

The annual awards competition recognizes outstanding achievements in engineering and land-surveying projects completed by California firms. This year, Syska’s Culver City office won an “Honor Award” for its work on the General Services Administration’s (GSA’s) new federal courthouse in Los Angeles, and the firm’s San Francisco office won a “Merit Award” for its work on San Francisco International Airport’s (SFO’s) Terminal 1 Interim Boarding Area B.

The new federal courthouse in Los Angeles is a 625,000-square-foot building with 24 courtrooms and 30 judicial chambers.  It houses the U.S. District Court, U.S. Marshals Services, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, a GSA field office, the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Protective Services, and the Federal Public Defender.  Syska provided all aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering, as well as energy modeling, for this design-build project.  The project has an energy intensity goal of 35 EUI, and in its first year of operation is tracking below this aggressive target.  In addition, the courthouse achieved LEED NC Platinum.

In San Francisco, Syska provided mechanical, electrical, architectural lighting, and vertical transportation design services for another design-build project:  SFO’s Interim Boarding Area B in Terminal 1.  This temporary facility will serve as a fully functional boarding area for Southwest Airlines, American Airlines, and Frontier Airlines for five years while construction of the permanent Boarding Area B and Terminal 1 takes place.

“Civic Buildings and Aviation are two of our most prominent sectors of activity,” says Gary Brennen, co-president of Syska Hennessy Group.  “It means a lot to us that the ACEC has recognized the hard work of our teams.”
