Joseph O’Sullivan, PE, LEED AP

Senior Principal

Joseph O’Sullivan is one of Syska Hennessy Group’s key innovators and a proven industry leader, having risen from a summer intern to a senior principal and managing director of the firm’s Central Region. Joe’s leadership of the Chicago office, aptitude for developing client relationships, and management of technically advanced, mission critical projects have a considerable impact on Syska, the industry and the community.

After interning in the summer of 1997, Joe returned to work full time in Syska’s New York City office after graduating from the University of Limerick in Ireland. During his first few years, Joe developed his expertise with corporate workplace and mission critical projects, and initiated invaluable long-term partnerships with Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, Bank of America, Wachovia and Cablevision, as well as with various law firms.

In 2007, Joe established Syska’s first Midwest outpost in Chicago. Joe’s leadership and dedication have resulted in performance metrics that demonstrate strong growth and healthy pipeline activity. Joe is most proud of his team of “work hard, play hard” professionals, and he’s thrilled to work with them every day.

In 2014, Joe spearheaded Syska’s initiative to develop staff, share technical knowledge, and foster communication and culture across all levels of the firm. The result was the Syska Employee Network of Support and Education (SENSE), which now successfully provides professional development, social events and mentorship opportunities in all 16 offices. Joe also oversees the Engineering Development Training (EDT) program and is a co-author of Syska’s Vision 2025, a roadmap to a strong and vibrant future of the firm.

Social responsibility has always been paramount to Syska and to Joe, which is why Joe initiated a partnership with SENSE and KaTO Design, making a meaningful impact in regions worldwide that desperately need help. Joe also leads the Chicago office’s participation on professional association boards, including the ACE Mentor Program of America, Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Network, 7×24 Exchange International, American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), AEC and U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Off the clock, Joe is a parishioner of St. Mary’s and a member of City of Hope’s Chicago Construction and Real Estate Council. He enjoys golfing, home brewing, playing sports with his three very active boys, and traveling with his family both to new places and back home to Ireland. Joe’s exemplary career and dedication to service will continue to inspire others for the next 40 years.
