Syska Hennessy Group opened its doors in downtown San Francisco in 1997, providing a full range of engineering services including MEP, vertical transportation, building assessments and infrastructure upgrades, commissioning, technology, audiovisual, security, energy modeling, and sustainable design.
Today, San Francisco is one of Syska’s fastest growing offices with most of our business stemming from existing clients. We design complex projects in the aviation, commercial, cultural sectors, data center, government and courthouse, healthcare, higher education, and retail sectors.
We work with premier architects, owners, and developers including HOK, MBH Architects, Corgan, IA Interior Architects, Bank of America, Union Bank, Apple, SFO, Judicial Council of California, JLL and CBRE.
As cities grow, effects of climate change increases, and water becomes scarcer, we are responding through better design of our built environment. We design healthy sustainable buildings that deeply reflect our clients’ values, and are rooted in our local culture and economy. For instance, we designed the ASUC Student Union Building on UC Berkeley’s campus with a mix of manually and automated windows to take advantage of the Bay area’s mild climate, and use downcycled wastewater rather than drinking water to irrigate drought tolerant landscape through subsurface and drip irrigation systems. The design of the MEP systems were developed using an integrated design process that produces harmony between systems and architecture to create healthy, comfortable, and productive workspaces. Ultimately the MEP system components and distribution system achieved the University’s key priorities, which included: sustainable and highly energy-efficient; adaptable with capacity for future modification or expansion; durable system performance over service life; and maintainable and easy to service.
Our firm is at the forefront of sustainability engineering. We were an early signatory to the Architecture2030 Challenge, actively supporting the goal for our new buildings and major renovations to be carbon-neutral by 2030. Syska San Francisco has 3 LEED AP and 1 LEED Fellow accredited professionals to engineer buildings systems that remain sustainable far into the future.
San Francisco’s Public Safety Campus was presented by AIA San Francisco the 2016 Citation Award in Architecture. Our engineers incorporated energy efficient elevator systems utilizing regenerative drive and enabling power to be restored back into the building’s electrical supply. The team worked closely with the architect to preserve the historical fabric of the building.
In 2015, Syska’s work for Weebly Headquarters was recognized by ENR California for Best Project for Interior/Tenant Improvement Project for the project. The 36,000 sf historic warehouse building underwent a complete interior overhaul and seismic retrofit along with MEP upgrades.
Working in the Bay Area provides us the opportunity to preserve and contribute to the region’s iconic architecture and urban landscape, which is among the most inspiring in the nation. The Bay Area is also one of the world’s fastest growing markets, and we take great to care to meet this growth while enabling architects and owners to preserve the unique character of our great city.
We’re particularly proud of our major MEP upgrade and fit-out work at Foundry 31, a 460,000 sf mixed-use building in Berkeley; Hawthorne Plaza, a 440,000 sf office building in San Francisco; Union Bank HQ at 350 California Street and a 280,000 sf office building; 535 Mission Street.
We are currently working on the SFO Terminal 1 Interim Boarding Area B, SFO Hotel, 399 Geary Street, SF Police Credit Union HQ, Microsoft Azure, and Modesto Courthouse.
