In 2004, Syska Hennessy Group opened its Richmond office to support the critical-facility market in central Virginia, and rapidly expanded to take on numerous high-profile healthcare projects.
In addition to being a market leader for healthcare and critical facilities, Richmond also provides mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection services to higher education, government, civic and industrial facilities. We’ve done this with the acquisition of key engineers who have many years of designing experience in each of these markets. As a result, the office has grown more than 60 percent in 2015, and is projected to grow more than 70 percent in 2016.
Recently, Syska provided engineering services for a renovation of Augusta Health’s Intensive Care Unit in Fishersville, Virginia. This project included a refresh of the 12,000-sf ICU department with 14 patient recovery rooms and nurse stations as well as supporting rooms and corridors. In conjunction with the ICU renovation, a lightly used administrative area of the hospital was repurposed for a new 4,200-sf respiratory therapy department.
As part of the revitalization of the state’s legislative building for the Virginia State Senate and House of Representatives, Syska provided full mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, fire alarm, lighting, telecommunications, security and audio/visual design services for the 16-story Pocahontas State Office Building in Richmond, Virginia. This building was refurbished to temporarily house the members of the Virginia General Assembly while their old building was renovated. This project required extensive coordination and focus on maintaining data centers and occupied office spaces while bringing in extensive, new infrastructure and finishes for the renovated areas.
Richmond is one of the smaller offices in the Syska family, though it is taking on large projects that wouldn’t be possible without the support of the larger “Syska family.” By utilizing the manpower of a global company, the local project managers in Richmond are able to support their clients in central Virginia like no other MEP consultant in the area. Our clients experience a close relationship with the local project managers, similar to a relationship with a small firm; however, these managers have access to the resources of hundreds of engineers and designers throughout the firm on a national level.
