Lankenau Medical Center, a leading academic medical hospital serving West Philadelphia, retained Syska Hennessy Group to provide engineering consulting and planning for its master plan to improve various campus facilities, encompassing a new, five-story, 281,000-sf patient tower; new acute-care facility; cardiovascular and cancer center; a vivarium research space; parking structure; and a central utility plant to serve the new, and one million sf of existing, facilities.
As part of the evaluation of the critical services needed to support the existing operation during the expansion, Syska conducted a detailed emergency preparedness study to provide recommendations, enabling management to make smart decisions about expansion and construction.
To design the central utility plant relocation and upgrade, Syska thoroughly evaluated the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems using benchmarking and field investigation. Our energy analysis focused on a new central plant, comparing the following fuel types: electric, steam, hybrid and geothermal, as well as cogeneration.
We also conducted a campus-wide electrical infrastructure assessment, including emergency power capacity and code compliance, and provided design options to meet redundancy, capacities, quality and cost goals. The sizing and configuration of the new, updated systems, including new utilities from the street (electric, water, sewer, gas), were determined based on best practices, patient needs and in concert with the multiple phases of the construction.
With strong project management, collaboration and commitment to excellence, Syska helped accomplish the projects’ schedule and budget. As a result of this significant expansion, Lankenau—renowned for its nationally acclaimed heart program, cancer center, neonatal intensive care unit and kidney transplant program—is continuing to provide the latest technology and world-class patient diagnosis and care.
