 One
of the lab stations within the Cancer Institute of New Jersey
In anticipation of the need for a substantial expansion to their
existing research and patient care facilities, The Cancer Institute
of New Jersey (CINJ) has developed a program and building to maximize
the potential for the CINJ site in downtown New Brunswick. The
new addition has added over 140,000 square feet of clinical, research,
support, and expansion spaces to the existing 75,000 square foot
structure. Included in the plan are provisions for the relocation
of the pediatric care facility, an AAA/LAC accredited animal holding
facility in accordance with the guidelines and protocol established
by the National Institute of Health (NIH), a validatable cGMP suite,
and two floors of laboratory space to support research. The six-story
addition includes building systems and technologies that will enhance
CINJ’s reputation as a progressive and effective research
and treatment facility. Some of the specifics of the building systems
include; central chillers and boilers with associated pumping located
in a basement mechanical room, central air handling and laboratory
exhaust fans in an enclosed mechanical penthouse with heat recovery
as well as a 5-story atrium smoke purge exhaust system. Challenges
in design included maintaining existing building operation while
building in close proximity, modifying existing to remain systems
such as Standby Generator, Fire Pump, and main electrical and natural
gas services.
