This museum, which opened in 1989, was founded by Harrison Eiteljorg
and is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the
history of the American frontier experience, particularly as it
relates to the culture and art of North American Indians. It houses
the finest collections of its type in the country. The building,
which sits at the main entrance to a state park, bears a distinctive
southwestern flavor: the pink Minnesota stone which covers most
of the exterior consist of 8,000 individually cut pieces. It totals
72,978 square feet divided into three floors: the first houses
auditorium, exhibit galleries and museum shop; the second contains
exhibit galleries, administration areas and members' room; and
the lower level has collection services, storage and mechanical
rooms.
