of the future Biota! Silvertown Aquarium
The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is a 180 year-old institution
dedicated to the preservation of animals and their habitats. ZSL
has recently undertaken the development of a world-class aquarium
that will feature aquatic animals and habitats from throughout the
world. Syska Hennessy Group has been selected to design the
Aquatic Life Support for the new aquarium which will be sited in
the heart of London's Royal Docks.
The new structure’s biomes will each hold an entire ecosystem
complete with plants, trees, fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians
and birds. The translucent biomes housing each of the ecosystems
create some unique challenges for the Syska Aquatic Life Support
Team. Every exhibit within each biome will have its own life
support system and the systems must be invisible to the visitor! In
addition, the diversity of the exhibits and their density means
more systems will be needed. All designs must adhere to EU
and British standards and all material specified must come from
UK or EU sources.
Syska engineers are exploring various schemes to design optimum
life support systems placed in creative areas where equipment can
be hidden from visitor sight-lines.
