The University of California, San Diego's catering services were experiencing great success and a demand for additional services. The University agreed to undertake the design and construction of a new facility with a state-of-the-art campus catering facility and consolidate Housing and Dining Services (HDS) into one location. Syska Hennessy Group was selected to provide engineering services for this new campus building.

Located directly west of Revelle Commons, the new building is situated in a campus location that presents several environmental and siting constraints. The west façade features floor-to-ceiling windows which cause extensive solar heat gain in this portion of the building. Syska worked with the architect to recommend building glazing, insulation and equipment specifications to maintain energy efficiency. Syska's mechanical team also incorporated a displacement ventilation system and Fanwall Technology® into the building to increase ventilation system efficiency and reduce load requirements.

The architectural lighting designers recommended using an automatic daylighting dimming system to balance lighting levels and energy efficiency without design limitation. This system provides photosensors which trigger changes in artificial lighting to manage light levels. All of these elements will support the project in achieving LEED® Silver and exceeding California Title 24 requirements by at least 21 percent.
