Time, Inc. Headquarters, New York, NY

Time Inc., a leading content company that engages over 150 million consumers every month through its portfolio of premium brands across platforms, moved its headquarters from the iconic Time & Life Building in midtown to 225 Liberty Street in downtown Manhattan – a burgeoning neighborhood home to other digital and media companies– in record time.

A relocation of this size generally takes between 18-24 months, but Time Inc. relocated 3,000 employees and critical equipment in just nine months, following design completion.

Syska was retained to provide IT, audiovisual and security consulting services for the 700,000 square foot space during the 18-month design, engineering and construction process. We were again hired by Time Inc. as 225 Liberty’s on-site consulting project manager and client liaison, overseeing the construction administration, carrier circuitry and services installation.

Centralized and Flexible Workplace

Spread over six massive floors of approximately 115,000 RSF each, the office contained mostly open-plan workspaces, video studios, versatile meeting spaces, a conference center, a café, an auditorium and an executive suite. To service the sprawling yet flexible space, we designed a central Main Distribution Frame (MDF) with all new technical equipment and integrated three Individual Distribution Frame (IDF) rooms per floor.

World-Class Newsroom

The Time newsroom was designed with a focus on digital technology. We created a 27’ x 8’ video wall to broadcast live feeds, a featured image or up to 27 individual videos. An overhead ring of televisions gives the newsroom staff the ability to glance at multiple screens and relay an interesting channel onto the video wall and surrounding loudspeakers.

State-of-the-Art Conference Suite

For the 4th floor, we designed a single control room to manage the lighting and audiovisual systems for seven individual conference rooms. A typical office space would have required separate controls for each room, taking up valuable square footage.

The 5th floor executive suite was built to accommodate the company’s existing boardroom table, relocated from midtown. We integrated the latest technology, including microphones, USB ports and power outlets, with no damage or alterations to the table.

During the relocation, Time Inc. continued to grow and leased a secondary space in Brooklyn’s Industry City to supplement their downtown headquarters. Syska also served as technology design partner for that space.
