For more than 50 years, Syska Hennessy Group has provided a full range of engineering design services in the Washington Metro area, including MEP, fire protection and life safety, technology, security, architectural lighting and energy modeling to fulfill the unique and complex requirements of government agencies. These include the State Department, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference (NAFAC), FBI, Smithsonian, Architect of the Capitol as well as federal approval offices, courthouses, and local, state and county permitting and inspecting divisions.
We partner with architects, owners’ representatives and construction companies throughout the region, supporting leading corporations and organizations in healthcare, corporate interiors, data centers and transportation. These clients include AIG, BlackRock, Deloitte, Deutsche Bank, Holy Cross Germantown Hospital and Morgan Stanley, among others.
Washington, DC, presents unique space, aesthetics and security challenges to the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry due to factors such as the 1910 law requiring that buildings be no taller than roughly 13 stories, the many different architectural styles and the age of landmark buildings, coupled with today’s stringent physical security requirements. Syska is experienced at providing high-performance solutions for the most constrained conditions, including successful projects at Union Station, GSA national headquarters and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) headquarters renovation.
We are most proud of our work on the Pentagon reconstruction—the 450,000-sf design-build fast-track project which commenced immediately after the FBI’s investigation following 9/11. In 2008, we were also part of a team that constructed the Pentagon Memorial at the same site to honor the 184 people who lost their lives at that site during the attack. These projects are close to our hearts.
The DC office is also home to Syska’s firm-wide lead security-system designer, who is an industry leader in the field of physical and electronic security. His expertise further enhances our ability to design engineering systems for secure facility types such as the Pentagon, embassies, federal buildings and courthouses.
Our government-matter expert and GSA peer reviewer Ken Schram co-authored Chapter 5 (Mechanical Engineering) of GSA’s Facilities Standards for the Public Buildings Service (P-100)—both the widely used 2010 edition and the recently released 2014 performance-based edition. Additionally, he was a part of the team that rewrote and updated the Physical Security Design Manual for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Syska DC works with government building occupants to upgrade and address their energy-inefficient systems—often designed in the 1960s and 1970s—to meet federal government 2020 Net Zero energy requirements. We utilize our benchmark data to enable clients to make the best decisions.
