Is it Better to Retrofit or Replace?

A case study of the United Nation’s HQ “The Carbon Case for Retrofits

UN Building

The Urban Green Council published an article about a new study that examines the decision to renovate the existing United Nation’s Headquarters campus, as opposed to demolishing the complex and building anew. The findings were recently presented at the UN.

Representatives from Syska, Vidaris and Urban Green—along with Michael Adlerstein, Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director for the UN Capital Master Plan—explained how they managed to bring efficiency to a building that was originally built with little consideration of energy conservation. The team also described how they created an equitable way to compare the retrofitted building with a potential replacement.
